Ending the Absurdity of Pointless Meetings
March 8 @ 8:00 am - 9:30 am
Join us for our Kitsap Business Forum meeting on Tuesday, March 8th where our featured speaker will be Michael Chaleff, Communication Consultant and Coach, whose primary focus is helping people to speak with confidence, clarity and persuasion. Michael’s experience spans two decades, from combat operations in the First Gulf War to arguing cases as a criminal prosecutor in Federal Court. He routinely coaches individuals, corporations and Federal Agencies on how to create better meetings and to help participants acquire the skills needed to speak persuasively in those meetings. www.practicalinfluence.com
In this KBF, Michael tackles the sometimes-painful topic of business meetings and how we can make them work better for us. Teams and leaders spend 30% or more of their time in meetings. So why are meetings not more productive and effective or, at least, getting better? Beyond the time and money wasted in poorly run meetings, bad meetings have real consequences leading to decreased morale, frustrated staff, stagnated creativity, and personnel departures.
How do we fix this problem? Well, from grade to graduate school, students are pitted against each other to attain class ranking. In essence, we are indoctrinated to believe that competition is essential to achieve success and advancement. Sadly, few are taught or trained to work productively together in teams, much less, to develop the facilitation skills needed to create collaborative work environments. As such, it is not surprising that when meetings fail, go long, start late, ignore the agenda, or are filled with people interrupting one another, that we are ill-equipped to get things back on track. Even worse, when meetings continue to become less productive, few have the skill, talent or courage to provide honest feedback thus perpetuating a cycle of the same mistakes.
But it does not need to be that way! Meetings, managed well, can be transformative, binding people together in cohesive teams, with explosive creativity and inspiration. Conflict can be turned into collaboration, leading to the exchange of divergent opinions that create meaningful outcomes. In this program, we will discuss ways to conduct better, more efficient, productive and collaborative meetings. Most importantly, participants will develop the skills needed to handle complex meeting dynamics, keep team members focused, and manage different communication styles to promote better results and inclusion.
