In the business community it is sometime hard to identify and pinpoint an emerging leader or entrepreneur. And as a young person coming into your career, it can be difficult to know your direction and accept the opportunities and successes coming your way. So, we put together a panel of three emerging leaders in our community to talk about their career trajectory and how they felt winning the Kitsap 20 Under 40 Award.

Leadership Kitsap’s 20 Under 40 Awards Program seeks to identify and celebrate exceptional business leaders under the age of 40 who are dynamic trailblazers in the Kitsap community. We want to share their stories and celebrate their successes, bringing these individuals together to grow into a powerful network of young leaders who can then leverage that network to make even more great contributions to our region’s economy and civic dialog.

PANELISTS

Matthew Augspurger, Wealth Advisor with Nepsis, Inc. (2020)

Matthew opened Augspurger Financial Group from scratch in 2008. Then in 2011, he became an Advisor within Nepsis, Inc, utilizing their unique portfolio management to better serve his clients. What distinguishes his approach to advising is the belief in “conscious capitalism”- that in order to succeed you must use business as a force of good. As a result, Nepsis, Inc gives their clients transparency in their investment portfolio to ensure the companies they invest in align with their values. In addition to being a Wealth Advisor, Matthew regularly volunteers with several local nonprofits, is a member of the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce, and is a frequent speaker at local seminars, providing guidance for successful families and local business owners.

Jana Goyenechea, Co-founder and Director of Aftercare, Scarlet Road (2022)

Jana co-founded Scarlet Road as a result of seeing those who were oppressed and marginalized through sexual exploitation and trafficking, consistently being overlooked and unserved in Kitsap County. What began as a 5K run to create awareness, evolved into a robust non-profit serving local victims leaving the commercial sex industry and sex trafficking and supporting their transition. Through holistic care, Scarlet Road offers the hope of freedom to those who have been sexually exploited and opens the doors to healing, meeting survivors where they are; be it on the street, in their workplace, or incarcerated. Jana leads a team of case managers and students, facilitates classes to survivors and community members, plans community-building and peer opportunities, interacts with various task forces and groups, and oversees program budget and organizational structure, health, and direction. She is a mentor and a servant leader who compassionately walks alongside others to help them work through barriers and embrace a vibrant life of freedom.

Anthony Jones, Associate Attorney, Perkins Coie LLP (2021)

Anthony is an enrolled member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, attorney, and Coast Salish artist. He bears the ancestral name k̕wqéynx̣ən. He was North Kitsap High School’s first Native American valedictorian in 2004 and graduated from MIT in 2008 and Washington University, St. Louis, School of Law in 2011. After eight years as a tribal attorney for the Tulalip Tribes, he now practices intellectual property law at Perkins Coie and is the Northwest Indian Bar Association President. By example and through organizational service, Anthony seeks to make the legal profession a more welcoming place for Native American people and other people of color. Anthony serves on the Board of the environmental nonprofit EarthCorps, developing leaders to strengthen community and restore the health of our environment. He carries forward the traditions of his tribal community through song, language, and craft. His works of art can be found on the Washington State Ferry M/V Chimacum, as well as in the Burke Museum collection at the University of Washington. “In all my efforts as a lawyer, as an artist, as a father, I have found that success is possible by following the teachings of my family and culture.”

Too many business leaders fail to set effective goals because they don’t start with the aspirational identity they seek and then set effective goals to achieve what they want. Success is so much more than metrics and KPIs. It’s about how you plan to achieve those goals. You need to ask yourself the big question – who, and what, do I want to be?
